Evaluation of the WRF PBL parameterizations for marine boundary layer clouds: Cumulus and stratocumulus

چکیده
1 The performance of five boundary layer parameterizations in the Weather 2 Research and Forecasting model is examined for marine boundary layer cloud regions 3 using a single column model version of the WRF model. Most parameterizations show a 4 poor agreement of the vertical boundary layer structure when compared with Large-Eddy 5 Simulation models. These comparisons against Large-Eddy Simulation show that a 6 parameterization based on the Eddy-Diffusivity/Mass-Flux approach provides a better 7 performance. The results also illustrate the key role of boundary layer parameterizations 8 in model performance. 9 10

Marine Boundary Layer Cloud Observations in the Azores
The recent deployment of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) Mobile Facility at Graciosa Island, Azores, in the context of the Clouds, Aerosol and Precipitation in theMarine Boundary Layer (CAP-MBL) field campaign added the most extensive (19 months) and comprehensive dataset of marine boundary layer (MBL) clouds to date. Cloud occurrence is high (60%–80%), with a summertime min...

A modified Tiedtke cumulus parameterization (CP) scheme has been implemented into the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model (ARW-WRF) to improve the representation of marine boundary layer (MBL) clouds over the southeast Pacific (SEP). A full month simulation for October 2006 was performed by using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) final analysis (FNL) ...

The recent deployment of the ARM Mobile Facility at the Graciosa Island, Azores in the context of the Clouds, Aerosol and Precipitation in the Marine Boundary Layer (CAPMBL) field campaign added the most extensive and comprehensive dataset of MBL clouds to date (April 2009–December 2010). Cloud occurrence is high (60–80%) with a summertime minimum. Liquid precipitation, diagnosed as the detecti...
متن کاملAn Intercomparison Study of MODIS-Derived and WRF-Simulated Cloud Data
As a first step in evaluating the realism of the model-simulated cloud fields, the observed and simulated 11 μm MODIS brightness temperatures are shown above. A detailed comparison indicates that the PBL and cloud microphysics schemes both exert a strong influence on the spatial distribution of the simulated clouds. For instance, compared to the WSM6 and PLIN simulations, the upper-level cloud ...
متن کاملModeling microphysical effects of entrainment in clouds observed during EUCAARI-IMPACT field campaign
This paper discusses aircraft observations and large-eddy simulation (LES) modeling of 15 May 2008, North Sea boundary-layer clouds from the EUCAARIIMPACT field campaign. These clouds are advected from the northeast by the prevailing lower-tropospheric winds and featured stratocumulus-over-cumulus cloud formations. An almost-solid stratocumulus deck in the upper part of the relatively deep, wea...
